I made a bunch of these last year and thought we could use them for presents during the holidays so I'm making more. There was an article in Woodsmith that described how to make them and it's relatively easy. I used my new Freud 3-1/4hp router, that has been on sale everywhere for $125, and between the dust collection and variable speed (no burning) it has been a pleasure. I have a lot of 8/4 scraps from building chairs so this is the perfect use for them but thinner stuff can be used and glued up to make some interesting bowls.

The first is Walnut and Curly Maple, the second is Zebra.

Frank, take a look at this video from Woodsmith.

Like Richard said, it looks relatively easy, and produces a beautiful end product. I've got my collet extension ordered, and can't wait to pop out a few of these for the Holidays!

Those are beautiful looking bowls, Richard. I saw that article in Woodsmith magazine. Thought I would save it for future use, like when I have good looking scraps to work with:rolleyes:.

I've had one of those bit extensions for some time and haven't put it to use for awhile. Thanks for the idea, Richard.

I have made a few of these based on the woodsmith
article. It was advised to use a forstner bit to remove
most of the inside waste. Using an extension puts a lot of side pressure on the collet and bearing. DAMHIKT.
NB: These are beautiful pieces, show us some more.:o
