Am looking for advice on how to go about replacing the tires on my 18" Jet. I ordered the replacements from Jet, but clearly they don't just "pop right on". I did a forum search and saw some oblique references to using heat. Am getting the idea this will not be a walk in the park. Visions of monkeys and footballs come to mind...

So, how you you change the tires on your BS?

Thanks!

Thanks, Bob. Unfortunately, I already have $40 invested in Jet originals. :(

But if I fail to get those mounted, I'll look into those poly's.

Thanks

If using a rubber tire, stretch the tire over the wheel but keep a 1" or so dowel in between the tire and the wheel. After the tire is at least somewhat "on", roll the dowel around the wheel evening out the tire and the tension the tire is under.

Use laquer thinner to remove old tire glue prior to putting your new tires on.

As far as crowning the tires, there are numerous ways to do this and a search on this topic will return diagrams and detailed explanations.

This article on the Old Woodworking Machines website (http://www.owwm.com/files/PDF/FAQ/1992-FWW-BandsawTires.pdf) will tell you everything you need to know about changing bandsaw tires. You didn;t exactly say whether you have rubber or urethane tires, but the instructions for urethane tires are the same except that you should heat them in hot water (about 130-40 degrees) before putting them on, and you won't need contact cement or any other adhesive for urethane tires.

There are other links to articles regarding bandsaw wheels, tires, and crowning on this page of the Old Woodworking Machines website (http://www.owwm.com/FAQ/Default.asp) as well.
