Living in Wisconsin, I have only felt one minor tremor that was based in the Missouri, Illinois, Tennessee corner. I looked at web site posted by Joe Pelonio and was amazed that there are more than 20 earthquakes recorded on most every day. I had no clue they were that frequent throughout the world. I have two kids in California and sure hope they aren't there for a big one.

I grew up in the Bay Area and lived there 40 years. I still remember the one in 1957 when our chimney fell, and of course the Loma Prieta "World Series"
big one in 1989. We get them here some but there it became almost routine
until that one.

I have to make a point of thanking you Joe for correctly identifying that quake by it's proper name. Most folks refer to it as the S.F. quake even though it was centered in the Santa Cruz mountains in Loma Prieta, as you mention. Santa Cruz, my hometown, was devastated relatively worse than S.F. but it barely got any coverage.

Anyway, 5.8 out in the ocean isn't really too much to worry about. We just had a 5.8 in the Bay Area a few weeks ago, centered on land, and there was VERY minimal damage, if any. However, judging by the calls into the Police, Fire, and into the media outlets, you would've thought that California was falling into the ocean. More than a few newcomers to CA reported that they thought that they were going to die. :D:D:D :rolleyes: I would just laugh and say, "Just wait". ;)

http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/recenteqs/latest.htm Here is the official earthquake site-- The ones seen here is for 7 days-- after that, each is removed. Get lots here in So. Cal. but never feel them unless they are 4 or more. There are several hundred each week, but usually 1 to 2 magnitude. :cool:
