I was given a real old Singer sawing machine that the veneer is breaking off the case. Is there a finish that will retard this deterioration.

You want to reglue loose veneer, and then stabilize moisture content in the wood. I'd use several coats of shellac for that task. It's more effective at slowing water vapor transfer than other finishes. Be sure to clean the surface well before adding finish, unless you plan to strip the oil finish first.

Thanks Steve. I guess I have work to do. I was hoping that the answer would be a little magic and poof it is done. I fiure this will give a good chance to learn finishing. Again thanks Steve

Ugg. Every Singer sewing machine ever made has lost or will lose it's veneer.

If it were me, I would just make a new top out of the real-deal.
