I stopped at Harbor Freight this evening to buy a tarp to cover our camper and while I was wandering around I found a 23ga Pinner for $16 with 1000 pins. I brought it home, tried some 1" pins on a piece of oak, some pine, and some particle board and it worked great on all three.
Our club meeting happened to be tonight and another guy mentioned he had bought one a while back and was very happy with it as well.
I previously had a Porter Cable which cost me something like $140 and only sunk the pins flush with the surface. Porter Cable said that was proper operation and gave vauge instructions on how to grind the nose to make it sink the pins below the surface, but warned that it would void my warranty. I ended up selling it at a loss. This one sinks them nicely. I did get a chance to use our club's host's PC which is a newer design and it seems to sink the pins properly. I'm not sure if it has been modified or not.
