Hey guys, I have some questions about planer knives. I found someone who is selling a 6 months old powermatic planer and the machine is in perfect condition (from what I can tell). He said he went through one set of knives quickly cutting burned wood (and ran into metal). He replaced the knives and used it for about 100 feet of hickory.
He demo'd the machine for me cutting a 10 foot hard maple board about 6 inches wide. The cut was smooth however there were consistent streaks down the length of the board created (they were noticeable to my eye from about 3 feet away). From what I could tell it seemed that the knives had been chipped in those positions. He is offering me the planer for $1500 (new $2000) with the extra set of knives included.
Now my questions are how much does it cost to replace a 20inch set of knives? Is it more likely I will be able to have the blades resharpened for cheaper and whats the cost? Also, how difficult is it to replace planer knives perfectly, do I need any special equipment? Perhaps it would be better to leave the knives until they are dull and just sand out the streaking?
Thanks for the help everyone
