I obsess over new skills, sharpening was one, and got way too involved in creating the perfect edge. Now, I use a spiral sewn wheel and some fine compound to quickly hone my chisels and plane blades during use. I've read that this could round the bevel, but seems to work for me. I'd love to hear what all of you use to quickly get that sharp edge again while in the middle of using your tools.

I have for years either used the buffing wheel youi mentioned or a leather strop with some kind of compound. Use ice pick or a awl on the leather before the compound. Concerning the rounding the the edge it has never been a problem on the bevel side and I sneak up on the edge on the flat side and don't overdo on the edge of the tool on the flat side. Harry

Leather strop & diamond paste for me when chopping mortises.... a few swipes every so often helps abate the need for a full on sharpening. Also makes for cleaner cuts & less clean up in the end, least for me.
