View Full Version : Spalted White Birch HF

This is the first completed hollow form from a white birch I cut down on my folks property this spring. The tree was standing with portions still alive but the bulk of it was just rotten. Most of the useable wood was already spalted and will make for some real nice looking bowls and hollow forms.

This hollow form is 7 Ύ” in diameter by 4 ½” high. It starts off around Ό” thick and increases to about 3/8” to ½” at the bottom. No foot on this one – just a small flat spot to keep it from rolling over!

Finish is 2 coats of Watco Natural Danish Oil, 2 coats of Minwax Gloss poly and then buffed.

Appreciate any and all comments. I’m trying to learn hollow forms – so please advise me as to what I can do to improve.

Thanks in advance!

Steve excellent work!

I am not 100% sure on the form on the top 1/2 of it. It has a indian pottery feel to the shape, but it seems like the openeing needs to be a little bigger on it. Not sure though can't put my finger quite on it. Just my opinion so take it with a grain of salt.

All in all an excellent piece .

Added in - As a note check out Paul Porter's web site http://paulporterwoodturning.com/id21.htm the page I listed has several forms similiar to yours with the wider opening. He is a well respected turner that works a lot in indian pottery type forms.

Steve,

Really nice looking bowls. I'm glad you were able to make something from that tree. I'm in the camp that, no matter what the plans for the wood when a tree fells, at least one thing should be made from it.

Good looking piece there Steve. The spalt looks like the right combination of color versus rot.

Beautifully done Steve!! The form has a very pleasing uniqueness about it. I think you've captured something there. ;) Great wood and nice finish. :)

Excellent piece! The spalted pattern in the first pic is complimentary to the form as a whole. And the finish is excellent.
