Today at work I came across some dunnage that looked very square, straight and interesting. So I took them home, cleaned a few up and in the image below, resawed a bookmatched pair.
Any idea what this type of wood is?
Thanks,
Alexhttp://www.hunt101.com/img/526455-big.jpg

I'd need to see a closer shot to say for sure ... I'd go with oak, too. Mostly for color, though. If i saw it closer i'd feel more confident in that.

Alex,
It's worthless firewood. If you ship it to me, I'll gladly dispose of it for you.

Ahh, yes. The bottom piece is swamp gas. The top piece is the infamous "Maburchoke". I haven't seen any of that in years.
It's been hybrigrafted; Birch grown around a little bit of Maple grafted to white Oak.
Very rare. Usually not seen in the wild, as it's a secret government project based on....hold on...someone at the door.

Thanks for the input everyone.
I feel safe to say it is not oak. Its much heavier than oak and also machines "differently".
What about beech?

Looks somewhat similar.

My wife says it looks like Hackberry, just like a dinning set my dad use to have. I still have a stump of a Hackberry tree in my yard. Looks just like it.

I think the top piece is spalted white oak. This is why it will feel heavier than red oak... Also explains the greyish color

Hackberry may very well be it!

I just saw a photo of some sassafras and it looks similar to your stuff, on the other hand it does look a bit like beech to me.

Looks like shagbark hickory to me. How does it machine? Hickory will pick badly and tear out when routed.
