I am in the process of hand carving a small dish the shape of a maple leaf. I actually took a maple leaf and traced the outline on cherry wood. I used a number of carving tools to dish it out. Tonight I spent 3 hours smoothing it out and still not done. Anyone ever make such an item and how do you speed up the sanding process. do to the small size my sheet sander will not help.

"Dremel high speed roto tool. They make sanding drums, disc's and cutting tool that may help out a lot.

And its no toy.

Try a Typhoon carbide bur - Different shapes are available - ball, cylinder, taper, etc. The basic shape is coverd like a porqupine with needle sharp carbide points. Very aggresive. It sounds like your bowl is about like a life sized maple leaf - 10 or 12 min. should be enough to rough-out the bowel - inside and out. Then sanding drums can finish it off. Typhoons are available thru the following web site - www.fandfwoodcarving.com (http://www.fandfwoodcarving.com). You can get them is 1/8" or 1/4" shanks.
