joiner/planer guard antique

does anyone know where i might find a guard for my joiner its a late 30's early 40's craftsman i have went thru this thing and it does a great job but its hard to hold a board down

It might be helpful if you post more information about the particular machine you are referring to; model number and even a picture to help illustrate the issue. If this was a "pork chop" type swinging guard, they are actually relatively easy to fashion out of hardwood if necessary. You just need to work out a way to deal with the spring-loading for auto-retraction and auto-return to insure the knives are never left exposed.
