Is there a link to anywhere to help identify what kind of wood some of my existing furniture is made from? I have an old dresser i refinished about 2 years ago, and want to create a headboard and chest for the foot of my bed in the same style/wood/finish. I can repeat the finish and stain, but want to make sure the wood is the same. Any guides? I am guessing it is a poplar or maple.

Might be tough , try hearnehardwoods site http://www.hearnehardwoods.com/Inventory/paduak.html or buy the Book "The wood bible" from amazon.

Alex -

You might try the link listed below; you'll need at least an idea of what you 'think' the wood may be then you can look it up in the index for pictures.

This site, NelsonWood has tons of information on different woods.

When you go to this like it will take awhile for all the images to down load, you will need to scroll down the page to see them, if there is no image showing then just click on the name and it will take you to a page with an image and sometimes all the information you could ever want on that wood.
I never knew there was so many different woods.

I hope this helps.

Amazon. Paperback for $80 - $90. Look it up, they even have some sample pages online. The original hardback edition runs about $400+!

Expensive, but it's a great resource. Put it on your wish list...
