That's pretty good Aaron! (Pretty scary - but still pretty good!)

I asked Aaron Koehl to take Ken Salisbury's picture and add an Uncle Sam hat. The idea was to have a "poster boy" for the Freedom Pens Program, an icon that everyone would recognise.

Aaron has exceeded my expectations, the new poster is just the ticket and I think it is fantastic!!!

Who better to represent our program than an Army war veteren who can turn pens with the best of them.

Ken I hope you take this in the right way, it is a tribute to your tireless dedication and long hours supporting SawMill Creek and the Freedom Pen Program.

Thanks to Aaron for the beautiful work and to Ken for your continued support...

Ol'Keith

Hey Aaron send me that file in the biggest resolution you have. I will get posters available on the merchandise page. Prefereably if you can zip and upload the .psd file somewhere so I can resize as necessarry.

That really looks cool . . . kinda scary . . . but cool!!

As far as posters . . . I think it would be great to have some posters to put up at schools, Turn-A-Thons, Woodcrafts, etc. but (no offense Ken!) I'm not sure this is the one since the average public wouldn't understand the premise.

What are the chances of someone who is computer savvy coming up with a generic type of poster that could be used and them us getting some in 2' x 3' sizes.

My creative juices are flowing . . . (either that or I just need to cough real bad!) . . .
a collage of photos blended together . . . a troop writing home . . . a flag . . . Miss Liberty . . . a closeup of hands working on a lathe . . . a LARGE blowup of a wooden pen across the poster . . . the Freedom Pens logo with website address

The copy (writing) should be minimum . . . something like "Show a troop they're appreciated" or something like that ...

Real colorful. Thjey need to be able to be rolled up for shipping (not heavy cardboard).

I have a friend in the business of doing advertising from small things up to billboards. Want me to check?

Thanks!

Cool, Now where do we Post it?

Keith Outten

The poster is going on the main page of Freedompens.org

I think from a marketing standpoint the poster is perfect...it looks "Real". It's not too busy, the message is very clear and it will peak people's interest to visit our web site to see what the program is all about.

Noah,

As soon as you get the poster on a T-Shirt at the Freedompens store let me know...I just have to have one for the Norfolk Turn-A-Thon :)
I would like a coffee cup too.

Forgive me if this is a double post . . . I'm still having problems with my computer picking up new messages. I tried posting this once but it never showed up.

Photoshop and I had fun on my Mac computer this afternoon and we came up with a generic poster. It's really rough and needs a lot of work but you can see it here . . .

Aaron did a super job putting Ken into that poster but again, when we are pitching this to the public, folks outside our circle won't understand the wit. I'd rather use the time with the public explaining the program and getting support than explaining Uncle Ken . . . hope there's no hard feelings . . . just one person's opinion on one given day.

Thanks!

I agree on two counts.

First - a poster or some type of flyer would be great for stores and sponsors.

Second - the poster should be generic so that the general public understands it. I like the Ken poster, but I would not want to try to explain it to others. For example, image that you only have 2 minutes to convince a sponsor. Do you want to spend that time explaining the poster, or explaining the importance and details of the program.

Just my thoughts,

Cool - I can't wait for the royalty checks start rolling in :D.

Jerry is probably right - even I would be pressed trying to explain this to someone who was sober :D.

Fantastic poster Jerry - I agree for the public using a more generic design also.
Did have a thought about the tag line:
How about "One Good Turn Deserves Another" Under the pic of the girl turning a pen???????

Kudos to both Jerry & Aaron for the great artwork.

Well I have to get my opinion in. You know opinion's are like tiny hiney's evrybody got one:rolleyes:. I agree that the poster aron created was excellent but I have some of the same issue's as Jerry. Us older folks understand the concept. I like the generic poster it say it all with a little discussion. Uncle ken wants you would be excellent for us with in the realm of the program though if nothing else for a keep-sake. Excellent work buy both . Thanks

Guys guys guys!
This was intended as a little piece of humor-- not a poster to be hung up for the public!

I really like both of the posters. Each one is different and presents a different approach toward the task at hand. For the record it isn't important that we explain anything to anyone concerning the Uncle Ken poster. The poster is a remake of on old standard. No matter whose image we used the result is the same, a more modern poster that drives the point home. It is just an inside joke that we used one of our own for the image.

Jerry's poster is also eye catching and is representative of our program. I like the photos and how he integrated the pen in the foreground. The soldier writing a letter hits close to home and is a perfect representation of the spirit of our program.

Use either one you like or make up your own for your local area, the artwork isn't the focal point of our program. Our pens are unique in color and design, our artwork can be the same. All designs should include the Freedom Pen logo, that is the only requirement necessary and will serve to brand our program.

The uncle Ken poster was my idea and I had Aaron create it to promote the program in our area. Hampton Roads includes NOB, the largest Navy base in the world, Langley Air Force Base, Fort Monroe, Fort Eustis, The Naval Weapons Station, Oceana,...you get the picture. The people of our area will appreciate the poster and I think they will embrace the spirit of it's intent.

Anyone else who would like to post their artwork for comments or to share with our members is welcome to do so, everyone should feel free to improvise, be creative and have some fun.

The photos bring me to an important note to remember:

The intellectual property (photographs, pictures) displayed in public or used in derivative works must have permission from its author or interested company. Just remember this when not using stock photography--a lot of photos coming out of newsprints are _not_ royalty-free. Most companies and photographers will oblige, however, given the purpose of our program, but permission is still requisite.

Particular care is necessary when posting things in public, as the likelihood of it getting recognized by interested parties is much higher.

Any original works I post--feel free to use however it fits with the intent of the program.

_Aaron_

PS. Sorry to be a downer, but it's important!

You are absolutely right, Aaron. That's one reason that my poster is still in the "working" stage. All photos except one were either taken by me or from stock photography where the copywright use is given. I'm trying to track down the owner of that photo for their permission or find another (anybody have a good photo of a GI writing a letter home?)

I went ahead and showed what I had just to give folks an idea.

If I can get it put together, I'll see what it will cost to have some posters printed and will let everyone know of the cost if they want one.

If I am able to come up with something, anyone has my full permission to use it for promoting Freedom Pens with no fee.

Thanks for an important point!

I found a speedbump in the road of life!

I talked to a friend who has a screenprinting company about the posters.

He said that for a standard size poster, 24" x 36", 4 color graphics, he can make them for about $5.00 each

That was great . . .

Until he said that the setup fee, and image developing fee for the negative was $450.00!!! :(

Ideas?

Jerry I printed it on gloss paper 81/2 by 14 and it looked great. I plan to take it to Knko's a copy copy to see what it cost to duplicate. I could buy alot of color cartridge's for 450.00. I'll update once I get the cost.

IMHO both are great. But if I HAD to pick one I'd pick Jerry's. Simply because it seems to say everything that needs to be said. One more thought, what if Aron's poster was incorporated into Jerry's. Maybe into the center, and the collage around it? Both really great

Just printed Jerry's poster out as a flyer, looks pretty good. Jerry do understand you right, you don't have permission to use all the pix yet? Would like to get it posted at a couple local buisness's, but will wait till you get it. :)

That is correct!

The photo of the soldier writing the letter (by far the best photo in the collage!) was taken from an internet site:

http://www.af.mil/news/airman/0803/cover3b.html

with the tag line on the photo listed as

by Staff Sgt. Shane A. Cuomo.

I'm having no luck backtracking the site to contact the photo owner because I don't know how (at least I'm honest!).

For some reason I seem to remember a loophole in the copywright law if the item is used for educational or non-profit use. Is this true? Are we legal to use the photo for non-profit purpose if we give the author credit?

Any attorneys out there . . . all help appreciated!

Aaron...nice work! I recognized Ken immediately. (Too funny!)

Jerry, I think that your poster is very concise, will incite and answer questions at the same time, and I would like a couple of those posters myself.

Nice work guys...keeping us laughing and working together.

Jerry,

Your poster is Way Cool. I called Kinkos and they can make copies from jpg files all color for 2.00 each.
11X17, Now to edit it for the Turn a Thon...

When can We use it?

Jerry Stringer

...the photo is out of Airman magazine in San Antonio. I was in the airforce so i recognized the blurb at the bottom. I have a phone # and the name of the editor and will call him tomorrow, by the way his name is Jerry R Stringer - you believe that?

The photographer is SSgt Shane Coumo and the link is http://www.af.mil/news/airman/0803/cover3b.html according to that it is the August 2003 cover photo of Airman magazine.

This is what Bud wrote me in an email. Can you believe this guy??? Seeing the photo and recognizing the information about it to track it down! Bud, my hat is off to you and I raise a Diet Coke in a toast!

Thanks! I contacted the magazine and they were thrilled to let us use it. They said that it had already been released for public use but appreciated us asking. I told him that we would give credit to the photographer and would treat the photo proud with our program.

I invited him to come onto the site and say "hi" so he may show up.

Thanks again, Bud. You done good!
