After unsucsessfully trying to pick up a lathe at auctions for the past couple of years, I finally found this site and picked up a Jet 1236 within a week. Oh happy days. My problem now is that most of the wood that I am finding is bigger than my lathe capacity. This was headed to the local yard waste center if I hadn't hauled it away. I felt bad about leaving a section that was just to big for my 18" chainsaw.

Congrats on the wood haul Paul! Should get some really nice bowls or HFs out of that!

As far as your lathe being on the small side - understand that is the draw of the vortex! There's always something out there that makes you think about bigger, smoother or faster! Lots of luck with that!

Looking forward to seeing what you turn out of this haul!

Congrats on the haul!

That's why they call it the Vortex!

Stop your whining and practice your groveling skills!  :D

Yes...yes I am truly jealous. :) I have always wanted to get my hands on a haul of ambrosia maple. It looks awesome. Can't wait to something made out of it.

Ambrosia Soft Maple, makes nice bowls.

Had to see what a bowl would look like. I took the smallest section that also had the center starting to rot out and cut out a blank. The wood was still very wet because I got sprayed as I turned it.
It has a bark inclusion in the side wall but should still look OK. Have it soaking in DNA for now.

Smaller capacity means you can get a bunch more bowls.

You just have to cut those in thirds or quarters instead of halves. Or trade someone with a larger lathe and different blanks. Free wood is never a waste.

Paul,
Wow, that is seriously pretty! Are there maybe some other nearby turners with bigger equipment that could use the bigger pieces? It would be a shame to waste any of that nice wood.
