I think I am ready to upgrade from the 3/4 horse motor I have on my lathe now. I have two questions.

1. What is the most HP I can run with the existing 110 in my shop?
2. Where do I find a motor once I know what I'm looking for?

Thanks,
Jason

you max out 110v at 20 amps or 2000 watts. i believe a 1 hs would be right at that or just over. if you need more horse power you might think 220vservice.

One (1) horsepower = 746 watts. Practically, the largest 110 volt motor I've seen is 2 hp.

Jason,
If we had an ideal motor it would only require 7A for 1hp. However, motor inefficiencies push that number closer to 10A per hp. You should be realistic and allow for 1.0-1.5hp as the max for a typical 20A circuit. 1.5hp draws about 15A steady state and can draw over 20A on startup and heavy loading (depending on the particular motor). If you try to use a 2hp motor on a 20A circuit, you'll probably need to reset the breaker on a regular basis which is not a good thing.

I'm in the same boat. I've decided I have to add a 30-40A/220V service to the garage for my lathe and BS motor upgrades. You can find used motors at yard sales, auctions, or your local electrical repair shop. The right motors aren't so hard to come by if you are shopping for a new one.

Good luck,
Dick

Pls. correct if wrong, but isn't the 1.5 hp. Jet 1642 EVS a 110/115 volt machine? If so, suggest you convert to similar arrangement. Others here can advise most economical way to do this.

Jason,
How big of a motor do you want? What lathe is it to work with? How big of a motor will the lathe handle? What kind of budget do you for? Any constraints on where the motor is placed?
That said, I bought an AC VFD from Automation Direct about 16 months ago during a similar upgrade. There was a knowledge turner that recomended them.
Their site only lists a maximum of 1.0 hp VFD with a 110 volt single phase input. T

The next step up is a 2.0 hp VFD which uses 230 volt input.
Other vendors are probalby close, but it would really pay check other vendors/sources.
The motors can be new, used, in town or off ebay. Really depends on what you want and your budget. About 16 months ago, the 2.0 hp VFD (with 230 volt single phase input) and a stout 1.5 hp motor that matched the output off ebay ren me about $215 or so. The 1.0 hp setup would be cheaper, probably costing about the same $215 or so now.
