My Grandson Lawson, who is 8 yrs. old informed me some time ago that he was nearly a teenager. As such he needed a box to put those things in that are precious to him now, but won't be played with when he reaches the magic age of 13. He wondered if Gramps would be able to make something for him to store those valuables.

I made this box from Basswood 10+ years, and had it sitting around waiting for a use!

For those of you who might not be aware of the method of decoration; it is called Chip Carving.

The bottom of the box is lined in blue leather.

The design for the bottom panel of the sides comes from the Netherlands and while being somewhat traditional is very old pattern.

I will have to continue in a reply thread. There is still the back side to show you.

I have embedded a 2007 Canadian twoonie as a dater on the rear panel as well as a short message from Gramps.

VERY nice.
I'm doing something similar for my daughter who just turned 13.
It started 13 years ago in an old wooden box I had avaliable and I'm currently working on a cedar chest to take it's place.
What I do is write notes, letters, use newspapers, toys, pictures and sometimes pictures with just post-it notes on them. (you get the picture)These all represent something important in our lives, something funny that happened, maybe a news worthy item or just interesting things.
SHe has no idea what is in the box as it is locked and I have the only key.
She gets the key on her graduation day as a gift from dad.
SHould something happen to me before that several relatives know of the project.
