Just got the GCC newsletter (http://www.gccworld.com/newsletter/0711/index.html) in, and there's usually a showcase where they come up with interesting things to burn. The first idea -marking cigars- is rather good and could come in handy for Xmas, but the second -marking PVC wire- WTF? Is this incredibly stupid or is there something special about the composition of insulation in modern wires that I don't know?

It will be marked either with their Yag or CO2 galvo systems , not the same risk as flying optic systems in terms of mechanical damage. The marking is also incredibly quick and releases almost no gasses etc , its just a contrast mark.

Ah. Thanks for the info. But still not something I intend to try...almost no chlorine is still some chlorine. I do sometimes get concerned about the long-term effects of lasering. Usually when I'm doing acrylic. Anything that tastes that horrible to breathe in can't be good for you.

Exactly why I don't eat spinach, cabbage, or broccoli :D

I am sorry, not matter how little chlorine it releases or not, I am not going to put in any of our machines. I have seen what it can do, its not pretty. Anything that can rust stainless steel when engraved is bad. I can always tell when a machine has engraved pvc because every stainless steel screw, bolt or tensioner is rusted.
