Well I am almost at the end of my African Sumac rough outs. This is a 10x3 bowl finished with a homebrew oil varnish.

Nice form, nice foot, great finish! The inclusion really gives it character. Pretty wood, too. Great job.

Very nice bowl Mike! Really like the size, clean form, rich color and finish! I also like the detail work on the foot - just that little something extra! Nice work!

Mike, this one is almost as pretty as the one which now resides at my house.;) I like this one also--and I like what you did to the foot.

Aren't you out of that stuff yet??:p

Cleary a 10/10. A bit of that curl I know some of your stock has might push it up to an 11/11.

Awesome job Mike. Too bad you are out of the sumac. Is african sumac an ornmental tree in your area or is it really gotten from africa?

African Sumac is very common here in Arizona. It is a little bigger then what I would normally call an ornamental tree. Most of mine comes from houses that are being demoed for new construction. On this haul their were several trees with the biggest being around 24 inches in diameter. I still have a couple on the drying rack including a 19 inch monster that I will wait till next year to finish turn. Besides Mesquite and Palo Verde and a few other most of the trees in AZ (urban areas) are not domestic. A lot are from Australian, Africa, India and South America.
It was kind of a joke I have a tendency to rough out as soon as I get the wood so when I go back to finish turn you will see a bunch of pieces from the same species for a while. Probably 7 out of my last 8 posts have been African Sumac since that is currently what is dry. Next up Eucalyptus and Chilean Mesquite.

Mike, do you put your sumac turnings in the sunlight to enhance the red?

Yes I do. I was lucky and I think Paul Porter clued me into that when I first scored some Sumac.
Usually I just leave it on my pool deck one day on each side.
