Hi all,

I recently moved back to the States from Scotland. I have an older British jointer I really like, but it has odd sized knives. They are 9-1/4" x 1" x 3/16". Anyone know a company that would make these for a reasonable price?

I'm in no rush, as I bought a brand new pair before leaving Scotland, but they went up in price by almost 50% in a couple years. I think the biggest difficulty in finding someone to make them will be the thickness--thicker than any other blades out there AFAIK.

I'm also toying with the idea of making new gibs that will be 1/16" thicker to accomodate 1/8" thick blades. Can't be too hard, as I have access to a machine shop. Anyway, any help would be appreciated.

Brad

You might have luck with Connecticut Saw and Tool. http://www.ctsaw.com/productline_at.html

For custom tooling you need to call them. (800) 404-1220

Without burning up too many braincells, I think you could run 1/8" thick blades. You may have to have longer gib bolts though. The stock blades of my Grizzly lack a lot of being 1/8" thick, though they say 1/8" thick blades. Give a shout to Globial Tooling- jointer and planer knives are their specialty. They could probably give you a definite answer.

Are you _sure_ they are 3/16? What make and model do you have?

Have lots of odd sizes for euro machines. Let me know if you want to order some, I wouldn't mind ordering some for my Inca. We could combine orders to save some $$$ on shipping. Once I receive the order I could UPS your stuff to you.

Yep, absolutely sure--etched right on the blades. It's a Multico L3 9" jointer (or "planer" as they're called over there). Yeah, I was hoping to get some made over here reasonably priced, or even find someone who makes anything 3/16" thick and have them cut down. If I need to get them over there, I'll probably pick them up when I'm over visiting relatives. Otherwise I'll remake the gibs.

Bruce,

I see what you're saying about longer screws, but these are a different kind of gib. They are wedges which hold the blade by tightening the bolts down from above. The previous owner was using 1/8" blades, but was using shims to take up the slack. Don't know about you, but that would make me very nervous.

Phil,

Just had a thought. It may be a pretty good idea after all to combine orders from NLS. First of all, they have the best price I've come across for Multico blades. (Wish I would've known a few months ago.) Also, they may be able to discount the VAT (17.5% sales tax), as they are being sold outside the EU. In fact, I know they can, whether they would go to the trouble for such a small order is the next question. As I said, I'm in no hurry though. I'll keep you in mind, if and when I'm ready to order; if you could do the same for me.

Brad,
You might check with these guys. I just got some 3/32 x 6 from them which are nice and reasonably priced.

(the list seems to be down right now)
Their phone in Oregon is 541-345-1122.
I ordered mine from a tool maker in Arizona, but the knives were drop shipped from Titan in Oregon. They do custom work too, but may very well have what you are looking for.

Ok Brad, just let me know. I think you can use this sites "Send a private message" feature if you want to pursue it.

Global tooling. If they don't stock them, they will make them. Very happy with my dealings with them.
