I am planning on building a Mission Oak coffee with my 10 year old for the LOML. Couple of questions. Doing a quick internet search for something to base it on, the advertisements I have seen usually say quarter sawn oak, but do not specifiy red or white. Is one or the other more traditional for Mission style furniture? And secondly, any thoughts on what finish to use to be traditional or close to it.

I'm fairly certain that Mission style furniture was made from Quarter Sawn White Oak. As for the finish, you could put a couple of coats of shellac on it to seal it. That will give it a nice "warm" tone.

I have a couple of pieces and they are both quarter sawn white oak. Both of them have a linseed oil type finish with no laquer or shellac. I have had them for 30 years and don't think they were refinished before I got them.

Go to www.homesteadfinishing.com (http://www.homesteadfinishing.com) and look in the articles section for a piece by Jeff Jewitt on how to achieve a mission oak finish. It's the best I've seen.
