Here's my latest table. The top and apron are zebrawood and the legs are walnut. Finished with Daly's Benmatte and Watco Satin Wax.

Lovely top, and the wood contrast is nice, but not overpowering.

Love that top.
How are the legs joined to the apron?
One thing that does strike me a bit is the tapering of the legs. Doesn't look right to me personally -I would of started the taper much higher.

I actually liked the shorter tapers myself. It gives the piece a more stable look as if it could (although Im sure its not intended to be) used for heavy work if need be. Nice combo of style and wood I think.

Nice job matching the grain. I might have used Zebra for the legs as well. How did you like working with the wood? I find it smells like wet dog when you cut it and is twice as dense as domestics. The finished product is worth the unpleasentness of it though.

it doesnt look like you bookended the wood. Was that originally 1 piece for the top (though it seems very wide if it was, but very nicely done). If not, you did an excellent job of matching them to form a smooth surface pattern.

What stock did you make the walnut legs out of? Did you get 1x2 and double them up? Or did you manage to buy a stock 2x2?

What kind of finish did you apply? It looks great in bringing out the natural color of the wood.

Very nice, i like the simplicity and beauty of the piece, you let the wood do the work for you in making a nice piece.

I think your table is grand. Daly's Benmatte , could you tell us about it? Not sure that I have ever come across that product before. Tell us more about the top, please. Is that one board?

Excellent work, John. Like others, I especially like the top. Beautiful boards, nice thickness and interesting end treatment. At one time I didn't care much for zebrawood, but I've grown to like it a lot.

It seems like wenge is the common compliment to zebrawood, but I like your choice of walnut. It's nicer to work with than wenge, less expensive, widely available and beautiful wood in its own right.

I used mortise and tenon. I think having a Domino would really speed things up.

I liked it. The wood is very hard. I read about bad tearout when planing zebrawood, but I didn't think it was that severe. I've had slightly figured eastern maple tearout worse than zebrawood. I really helps to have a drum sander though. I took it to a cabinet maker that has a drum sander to get the top smooth and flat. A ROS would have been very time consuming.

The top is 2 pieces of wood about 9 inches wide glued down the middle. The board had a pattern that repeated itself down the edge. I cut the board in half, flipped it around and was surprised to see it looked liked it was bookmatched. Added bonus!!

The walnut stock was 2 inches thick. The original board was almost 7 feet long and about 10 inches wide. A really nice piece.

Daly's makes a number of products. BenMatte is their tung oil with other stuff in it to make it dry faster. This is my first attempt at an oil based finish. Very easy to use and it brings out a beautiful color in the wood. Mark Singer here at the Creek also uses Benmatte. He made an amazing zebrawood table and finished it like I did. I got the idea for the Watco Satin Wax as the last step from him.

After the BenMatte I used Watco Satin Wax. Got the idea from one of your threads. Thanks for the tip!

That's neat lookin'. I like zebrawood, but I think I'm allergic to it. It sure adds a lot of interest to your piece. Well done!
