View Full Version : Planer cleaning question

Okay, my tabletop Makita is a nice little planer, but I have to clean it frequently while planing some salvaged old-growth cedar T&G.

I usually wipe everything down, inside and out, then apply paste wax to the bed and buff it off. The material flies through, coming out pretty, until a few passes, where it all slows down again.

I think a combo of cedar resin and wax is making the bed (and maybe rollers?) sticky.

What's a good way to clean off all the crap? I thought about trying different chemicals (mineral spirits, WD-40, rubbing alcohol, vodka---nope, wait, that's for something else) but I've been having the sort of luck where if I tried some harmless liquid, my planer would burst into flames. What I would call interesting, adventure-filled luck.

So if you have a good trick that will make my planer cleaner and my life less filled with adventures, please tell me.

Thanks y'all.

I use mineral spirits on the metal parts.

Thanks, Glenn. I'll give that a try.

If anything bursts into flames, I'll report back.

I have read here that WD 40 can interfere with finishing on the notion that it contains silicone.

The MSDS sheet does not list silicone as an ingredient

and the maker says there is no silicone but, they won't tell you what is in it exactly.

Okay, mineral spirits cut right through the crap on all the metal. I was careful to stay away from the rollers and anything else plastic.

I'll get some naptha for the rollers.

Thanks, you guys. It seems so easy, but I didn't want anything I cleaned with to end up on the material.
