Howdy,

Man what a good weekend. I actually built this coffee table to match the EC in one weekend!!!!! It helps if I don't screw up every part of the project like I usually do!! :D

It is all solid white oak except for a 3/4 ply bottom. The body is frame and panel construction and is 23 X 39 X 17. The top is 25 X 41 and made from a couple of those sequenced tiger oak boards like I used for the EC. Sanding the boards makes the tiger nearly invisible, but it will return nicely once the finish is on. The design is basically like a blanket chest. The top will be hinged. I'll put a couple of handles on the ends to continue the blanket chest theme. It should match the EC very nicely.

The top boards are a pretty cool bookmatch. I had to sand them thinner than 3/4, but I think it still look OK.

<IMG SRC="http://www.terryhatfield.com/cttop.jpg">

I got everything milled, the panels resawed and the top done yesterday. Today I did the joinery, formed the arches on the lower rails and put it together. I can't remember when I had this much fun in the shop. :D

<IMG SRC="http://www.terryhatfield.com/ct3.jpg">

<IMG SRC="http://www.terryhatfield.com/ct4.jpg">

Now, I gotta get some hardware ordered and get it finished.

Thanks for looking,

Terry

Thanks Jim,

Interesting side line on the top deal. I posted a couple of pics when I was in the planning stage on the Design Forum. I thought from just looking at the boards with the naked eye that I had them properly aligned. Once I saw the pic I realized that one of the boards needed to be shifted about 3" to get the match right. I would have screwed it up if I hadn't taken a picture.

I still don't understand why I couldn't see the difference, but it sure showed in the pic.

Keeee-ripes, man! That would be about a month's worth of weekends at this end! Nice job. To echo Jim, I too like the bookmatched top. Can't wait to see it with some finish on there!

Ron,

You know me, no problem with lack of pics. :D

Hopefully I can get it done in a couple of weeks. I'm heading to KC for the ww'ing show this coming weekend, but I plan to finish it the next.

John,

I hear ya man. I never dreamed that I could do it that fast. Everything just went right for a change. It took 19 hours total.

The top really bugged me at first. I don't usually use boards with the cathedrals for tops, but everyone seems to like it and I really wanted to show off these boards in a prominent position, so I guess it's all good.

Edit: I actually went ahead and resawed the panels for the matching end tables today while I had the resaw setup on the BS, so I already got a head start on the next projects.

Looking good there T. It appears you work as fast as I do(..not that this is a good thing). Once I start a project I hate to stop.....so I just keep starting new ones. Good design...does the top flip up?

Terry,
That looks great! I like it. Looks like you made all the right choices to end up with one fine looking table. I've had to set mine aside until we can schedule a day to go hardwood shopping for something to make the top out of. Again, that is great work Terry. Have a great evening.

DR,

Well...it will. I sorta out ran my hardware on this project. I'm usually slower than Lee Valley, but not this time. I'll just hinge the top and put a couple of pulls on the ends to complete the "look".

I could not figure out how to make doors that looked right given the table's dimensions and design so I chose to go the blanket chest route. It will give the LOML more storage and easier access anyway.

Cheryl's happy so I'm happy. :D

I showed your "coffee table" to the LOML.......Guess what?
Yup....you guessed it.........Now Tracy wants ME to make HER one <B><I>Just exactly like it!!</I></b> She really likes the idea of the Blanket Chest design and the Mission Style.

You have done another wonderful job and excellent work and craftsmanship as usual.!!! Congratualtions man....you did <b>good.!!</b>

BTW, You gonna teach me how to make mine that <i>fast!??</i>

d,

I should have just made 2 while I was at it. :D

I'll shoot you a copy of the cut list. I didn't take the time to do a measured "drawring". :D

The blanket chest idea was really not what I originally intended, but Cheryl liked the idea of more access to the stuff being stored. Worked for me and made the project much simplier than building doors or drawers.

Terry, good job, and I like it.

But, I think it would look better with vertical grain on the panels..... Hummmm.....

Just foolin'! It looks like it is supposed to.

Todd,

You made me spit ice tea on my keyboard. It's a bit too late for "design changes" now. :D

Your right, horizontal was the way to go for sure. I just couldn't make up my mind because of the vertical ends on the EC. You were right on the top too. I think it's gonna be cool.

Thanks for the help,

Bob,

It will be finished to match the EC I just completed. 50/50 mix of dark walnut and cherry stain with a few coats of satin poly.

Hopefully it will look like this....

Terry,
Nice piece of work. I don't often work in white oak, but last time I did, I book matched the sides and top of a small chest of drawers, about the size of your piece. It was end matched as well. Took it all out of a 2x12 of WO, 8 feet long.
What I found was that when I resawed the WO, it moved on me quite a bit. I haven't had this trouble with other woods that I have resawn in a similar fashion. Did your WO move on you a bit? Mine cupped, and twisted. I should have easily netted 13/16, or maybe 7/8, but wound up with a light 5/8 by the time I was done reflattening. It was of slab construction, with half blind dovetails connecting the sides to stringers. At this narrow, the DT's were difficult.

Alan,

The top for the coffee table is 2 bookmatched boards that did not require resawing. The door panels on the EC didn't move at all when I resawed them nor did the panels for the coffee table.

However, the board I resawed for the end table panels rolled up into a ball. I'm trying to save them, but I don't know if it's going to work or not. It won't be for lack of trying. :) I have them stickered with a BUNCH of weight on them. No idea of they are going to be useable or not.

Edit: At least I should get extra credit points for the use of big block ford heads, firewood and anything else I could find that was heavy. :D

Great Looking Table Terry!

You shouldn't have put it up on top of your HUGE! work bench. It made the Coffee Table Look SMALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great work - can't wait to see pics of it finished

Terry, I see trying to make up for not being in the shop this upcoming weekend. Great work. Man, 19 hours in one weekend. I dream to get that much shop time in one weekend. That is without the guilt trip from the family.

Great work. :D

Very Well Done!!

My wife would kill me if I put an unfinsihed table on her dining room table like you did in those pics. :)

Everytime I see your shop and that workbench I'm in awe.

Thanks for posting the pics.

Terry,

Did you just "dry-stack" to board with weight to try and uncurl them? You might consider wetting one side and applying heat (from a bulb) to get them to curl back.

Pretty creative veneer press there. You must be thinking of submitting it to the "shop Notes" section of a mag.

You might be setting yourself up doing this so quickly.Man if I finished something like that in a weekend, it would be hard to justify taking longer on other projects.

Looks good. I might see if this would work out as a new coffee table here, we could sure use the extra storage. Cant wait to see it finshed. Good luck with the warped wood, doesnt that just tic you off when that happens and you think you did everythign right.

OK, not bad for a surgeon. ;) So when does the Speed Class for Dennis and I start? There should have been just about the right amount of breeze to clean out the 3 or 4 saw dust particles left. :D

Why did you just make one copy? Three (not two as you suggested) would have not taken much longer. Then we could fight over who got the purdy top! No, I take that back. There would be no contest with your Cheryl in the fight.

WOW! It came out really nice. We need to come over and slam the number 10s down on top of it. :D It is hard to figure out, at least for me, what to do with cathedral patterns.

My conscience requires me to print this for my Cheryl, but I already know the outcome.

Alan,

LOL...yup. I am creative if nothing else. This wood blew my mind. About half way through the resaw, the kerf on the far end was 4" wide!!!! The wood is probably just kindling now, but I thought I would give it a shot anyhow.

You guy's are on your own. I'm not allowed to make anything except furniture for Cheryl. :D

I forgot about Payton's size 18s! :( That is all 2" material right? I mean it's only oak you know. :D

...only furniture for Cheryl... OK. Your house is how many square feet? At each piece in 19 hours... I think you can start on "our" stuff in a couple of months surely. ;) It is really neat when something comes together like that one did and ends up looking so great to boot. You really are artistic. Or is that "autistic"? :D

Cheryl says we need to get some chicky feed, so I'll email later.

Ha! T, we all know what keeps us "old geezers" (yeah you too) off the streets. Our kids are DRIVING!!!!! And that says nothing about the 14 year olds carrying guns and driving squad cars chasing 10 year old girls talking on cell phones. The streets of "small town USA" are a terrorist's nightmare. You "squirts" who are too young to have kids driving can disregard this post... for a little while. :D
