I have been using hollowing tools like the ones by David Ellsworth and they are homemade. My problem is i can't seem to get a real smooth finish on
the inside walls. Would a tool like the Hunter do any better? I mount the
piece so the grain is cross grain not end grain. Any ideas?

Bryon,

I have not used the Ellsworth tools, so I can not comment on them.
I have and use both the Hunter tool, and the Sorby Hollowmaster, for my finishing cuts when hollowing. The surface comes out pretty smooth and with a little sanding is done.

With a good steady hand the Hunter tools are awesome!! Start sanding with 180-220. I have the #1, and am going to get a #3.

I built myself a hollowing tool this weekend and it seems to work realy well. I am still very new to this turning gig but the vortex has a firm grip and I can't see it letting go any time soon. Maybe it's because I don't have somone telling me "you can't do that" that lets me make my own mistakes and stumble onto techniques that work realy well for me. Any way a bought a boring bar and HSS cutters from Busy Bee Tools, ground a rounded end on a cutter, put a handle on the boring bar an walla a hollowing tool is born. Tried it out on some green maple chucked end grain with a 1 1/2" starter hole an got some pretty good results. The cuts were very smooth. So for about $8.00----

Mike,

I was going to order the same thing that you ordered but Busy Bee does not ship outside of Canada. Any idea where I can get the same thing from inside the US for a similar price?

I'd also check out Packard, they have the bars of different sizes of tool HSS and boring bars.

Bill, I'm away from home right now but can post some pics on the weekend when I get home. It's really quite simple, I just made a bushing out of some heavy wall pipe and use set screws to hold the boring bar into the bushing which is set into a piece of 1" steel tubing about 2' long for the handle. Crude but effective!
