How is shellac measured?

Is shellac measured by weight or by volume? So that if a 1 lb cut is 1 ounce flakes mixed with 8 oz of alchohol, is that 1 ounce by volume or weight?

The shellac is measured in weight so 2 pound of flakes to 1 gallon of alcohol is a 2 pound cut.

Correct. Shellac is measured by weight.
Since I try to only mix what I think I'll use, I broke it down to equivalent smaller units...cups. 1 ounce of flakes in 1 cup of alchohol will give you a 1 lb cut; 2 ounces of flakes in 1 cup of alchohol gives you a 2 lb cut, and so on.

Not sure what you dudes are talk'in about, I thought a good shellac'in was measured by the number of whacks with a board. :D
