I am thinking of a new lathe and wondering how many use the bore in the tailstock? My current lathe, which I will sell has a bored tailstock. Wondering if this should be a requirement on a new lathe. I have only used the bore to make a few lamps in the past but you never know?

Thoughts?

Bill, I could be wrong but I think most tailstock do have the bore capability but often have different diameters. I'm hoping to use mine between now and Christmas.

Comparing the specs (since I didn't pay attention when looking) on the Powermatic 3520B vs the 4224 it appears that the 4224 has a bore in the tail stock and the 3520B does not?

And the Jet 1642 does have a bored tailstock.

Bill...I checked the PM3520B MANUAL. The tailstock has a 3/8" hole through it and the head stock has a 5/8" hole through it.

If it's bored, maybe your not using it enough. :p

Thx Ken for checking that out - I did find it odd that the specs differed in that area but have also noticed that for a Robust lathe it is optional.

eerrr, excuse me folks, but I'm kinda new at this. What's the bore for? My Jet 1642 has a hole through both the head stock and the tail stock, but I thought that was just for knocking the spur, chuck, live center, etc out.

Chuck.....they make special very long drill bits that you can mount in a handle and drill through lamp bodies for the electrical wires

I use mine all the time to make rolling pins. I use 3/8" stainless steel threaded rod and turn them just like a giant pen.

In the head stock you can add a collet chuck which requires a long bolt to draw up the collet .

Chuck.....I also use the one in the headstock. I use a long bolt to hold the jacobs chuck with a morse taper in place. Then I can chuck up a mandrel and turn bottle stoppers.

That's neat. I didn't have a clue. Probably never would have figured it out.
