View Full Version : Bowl turning questions?

I turned a bowl yesterday which seemed to come out pretty well. I took a piece of oak from a recently ice damaged tree and turned it with the end grain facing the tool rest. Is this the right thing to do? Also, I had a good deal of trouble cutting the end grain. Ended up using the parting tool to do most of the hollowing since my gouges would catch big time. Would a bowl gouge cut the end grain or am I doing this entirely wrong?

A scraper works really well on end-grain. A bowl gouge will work better than a spindle gouge and is required if the bowl is of any size. Make sure you hold the gouge with the U turned over toward the center of the bowl. A gouge held straight up and down will cause a catch everytime.

Just a simple bowl but it looks kinda nice.
