When it goes right that is..... :D

I went out to the shop this morning after getting some good and timely advice from Todd and Lars on the Design Forum. I was contemplating whether this top would look OK or not for LOML's coffee table. I am making the coffee table and a pair of end tables to match the EC.

I still have a few of those tiger white oak boards and I really wanted to use the most figural (is that a word?) part of them for the coffee table top. I just wasn't sure they looked right. Todd and Lars gave me the thumbs up, so here it is glued up and sanded. The boards were a bit cupped. It took about an hour to sneak up on flat with the Performax since I don't have a jointer nearly wide enough and the coarsest paper I had for the 16-32 was 80 grit. Both these boards were just over 14" wide to start.

The top is a bit under 3/4 now but hopefully it will look OK. If not I guess I can build up the edges.

After the top was in the clamps, I milled up all the stiles and rails of the table from the same boards the top came from and resawed all the panels. I just need to cut the tounges and grooves and form the arches on the lower rails and then I can do some assembly!!!

Like I said, I love woodworking when it goes right!!! Seems it goes better when I am freshly practiced up!!!! It was 2 steps forward and 3 steps back throughout the entire EC project!! :confused:

If I was Norm I would say "We will easily finish this project tomorrow". 'Course ......I ain't Norm, but hopefully it will look more like a coffee table by the end of the weekend.

I was going to start on a Shaker tall clock today...instead, i decided to make a new work bench(..start anyhow). I have laminated some 5/4 hard maple and cherry toghter(mostly maple). The bottom will have two banks consisting of 4 drawers each side....should be pretty nice. I was going to use curly maple(..I have lots :D ) but I thought that would be to much :p

By the way, where do I read up on posting photos here, anyone?

Seriously, there is a "manage attachments" button on the bottom of the post screen. Just click on it, choose your file and add it to the post.

I usually just write the html like on Wood when I post pics.

Not sure why it did not pop up...the file transferred over but only showed up as a text link, whcih had a file attached.....I will keep trying.

Hey Terry that top looks awesome man! Cant wait to see the table. How do you like your thickness sander? Which do you have? I have been considering the woodmaster 38", however its only single drum and the double is almost twice the price =(.

I got the 'elcheapo Performax 16-32. I'm not in the same tool buying league as you guys. :p

Honestly I really , really wish I had the Woodmaster. I have heard nothing but good about them, but alas I must settle for the 16-32.

Honestly it does a nice job. You just gotta go slow and take of a teeeny bit at a time. Overall it has been a good machine and it was well worth the price. I have used it a TON.

Those boards made for a great book-matched top. Looks great Terry! I'd guess the Performax got rid of the 'sun-tan' the one board had. I'm sure you know this, but that top (as will all tops) will move a bunch - 3/8" or more, depending on climate.

LOL...I bet it moves more than that!!!!! Huge humidity swings here in AR. The design of the table is more like a blanket chest. The top will be hinged in the back and just left to do what it wants in the front. I learned the movement lesson the hard way. The first dining table I build blew up like a cheap firecracker. Bum deal, but good lesson.

Thanks again for the advice. I think the top looks pretty nice. I was lucky...really lucky to find 4 of these sequenced boards at my supplier. Usually they get all stirred up during the drying process and there is no way to find such. I've been saving them for quite a while just for the living room furniture. That's why the top board had the "tan". :D Matter of fact, I got 3 of them at one time and then found the other one about 6 months later. Go figure. I really don't understand how they stir them up so much, but they sure do.
