I was asked to refinish a Hope Chest. It was made by Lane furniture, I'm guessing 40-50 years ago. Man what a piece of furniture! I swear that the veneer is 1/16" thick! No brad nails in this puppy; all screws. The lid has a copper band all around it's edge to keep out the external environment. Inside the knots and surrounding area are shiny. Initially figured it was pitch. I think it is shellac to contain the pitch. Looks kind of funny. All those shiny spots against unfinished cedar. All the hinges are in great shape. There is a push button lock that works as well today as it probably did when it was new. It's nice to work on something like this.

My mom has one of those...even with the "crackly finish from time", it's a magnificent piece of furniture.

Sounds like a wedding chest that I refinished a few month ago. This one was made by montgomery ward(sp). Any chance of posting a few pics?
