Yesterday I picked up this chunk of maple (at least that's what I was told it is) from someone on Freecycle. Any suggestions on how I should cut it up to make the most of any crotch figure that might be in there would be greatly appreciated. It is about 30" long and about 18" in diameter.

You might want to rent this video. I learned alot from it about this very subject.

Just try to line up all three piths and rip it right through the middle of them.
If you want standard bowl blanks.
Lay out your circle for the largest blank you can get. Once you map out your main blanks the rest will be come obvious.

Not all crotches have the figure we are looking for. If it does have figure turn it so the middle of the log is the bottom of the bowl (opposite how I normally do it) or else much of the figure may turn out.
