View Full Version : Ok WW'ers, what is your "daily driver"?

John Ricci

Company vehicles excluded, what do you drive on a daily basis for your transportation needs. My dd is a 99 F150 ext cab 4x4. I tend to haul wood, furniture, tools, bags of feed etc. in the daily routine. For fun though there are 3 Jeeps (we have 100 acres) to beat the hell out of in the woods/fields. My wife drives a new Subaru 4wd wagon and there's a mint old Caddy and an older Toyota 4wd wagon waiting for me to have time for them. Whatch' got?

2000 Subaru Legacy sedan. Manual trans and all wheel drive. (Worked for Subaru five years) Still on original set of brake pads with 147,000 miles. Am going for the total mileage record that I have seen with my own two eyes of 532,000 miles. Driving 80 plus miles a day round trip to work, they will add up quick.
Ex wife has a Subaru Impreza going strong with over 100k. Man trans and all wheel drive.

Me: 1995 3/4 ton GMC extended cab, 350, 5speed manual trans 194,000 miles and counting. My mechanic said he can put a new motor in for $4500 with a 3yr, 3600 mile warranty when it becomes necessary. It's got one cylinder burning oil so it may not be too much longer. I just hate paying a truck note and besides, I love this old truck.

Wife: 2003 Yukon but like most SWMBO's, she would rather be driving a new one.

Me: 1993 Ford F250 XLT supercab longbed (351/E4OD/2WD/4.10 open) Has a recently added wrinkled area, thanks to a customer backing out of his driveway with his BMW 318i. Since it was just a sheet metal area, I let it go, I felt worse for him breaking his taillight assembly ($227 just for the part) plus some scuffs and a ding. Not to mention, the hit was right next to the rusty wheel well for which Fords are famous. Nearing 160k miles and still going pretty strong (some minor mechanical things need attention at some point). We won't talk about the gas mileage it gets, as this is a family forum. At least we moved into town this year, so I pay half what I used to in a month for gas.
Wifey: 1996 Grand Caravan LX (3.8/FWD). Has most of the bells and whistles for that year. On its second tranny, thought it would be on its third this summer, but 'twas just a broken axle ($300 is better than $2300). Approaching 165K miles now and running pretty well (need to replace an oxygen sensor because its heater circuit is dead, so the MIL is on, but doesn't significantly affect operation).

I have a 2003 VW Golf TDI. It is the diesel so I get decent mileage. I'm not happy that I've recently been down to 35 or 36 MPG, but spending a lot of time at stop lights and such due to the Minneapolis bridge collapse isn't helping things. I also should get the fuel filter changed.

I'm averaging 15,000 miles per year even with just a 25 mile a day commute. When I get up to 40 MPG I tend to drive places I never would in a vehicle that gets 20 or 25 MPG.

My other vehicle is a 1995 bus converted to an RV that gets about 8 MPG, but it was designed to take a lot of friends on trips so the fuel bill per person is small. It also is only driven 1/3 to 1/2 as many miles a year as my Golf.

I want to get a mid 90s F250/F350 diesel truck for a hauler, but my finances are tied up up in a new house right now.

My sis and BIL have an early '00s Jetta TDi. He used to work for Cummins, too (as an MechEng), so he knew a bit about diesels. At one point his mileage had dropped from 48ish to 40ish, until he cleaned out the whole air intake/turbo system, I think it was. His mileage promptly went back up to close to where it was before. Something worth looking into.

Kona dew deluxe. Spring 2006. Front and rear disk brakes. 24 spd.
This is my ride, 5 days a week, 12 months a year. Thanks to global warming, road salt, and the S.Ontario freeze/thaw cycle there are maybe 10-15 days a year that I can't cycle the 4km to work.

My daily driver is a 2001 Toyota Echo 2Dr coupe with 249,000 miles on it. It is a bit on the ugly side but it gets 40+ MPG and (get this): with the passenger seat folded down I can carry 3 full sheets of ¾ plywood cut into 2X8 pieces, or 16 8 foot 2x4’s or a whole bunch (not sure how many) pieces of 8 foot ¾ inch stock!

My week-end driver is a 96 Toyota Tercel 2 Dr coupe with 279,000 (plus) miles. I can’t carry much inside it, but I use it to pull a 4X8 Harvey trailer. Recently, I loaded the trailer with 30 4 foot long pressure treated 4x4’s, 150 2x2 balusters and a BUNCH of tools and pulled it 350 miles to Connecticut. Uh, well, lets just say it was a slow trip….

My wife drives a 2005 Toyota Avalon which I am only allowed to sit in, or wash.
