To host a Boy Scout "Pioneering" activity, I need to find a couple/few dozen poles. Any thoughts on who to contact that might have pine poles, or such? Looking for something light enough for teens to handle but strong enough to build bridges and the like (using lashings).

Not looking for lumber, just poles. I think this stuff just goes in the chipper when woods get cleared, but don't know and figure there are Neanders who do. FYI - I'm in the Chicago suburbs.

Lashing poles with a notch or two counts as woodworking, right?

Thanks for any ideas.

On several occasions I've directed scout troops to various grown-over logging roads in my woods to harvest alder poles. I'm sure you have similar pioneer trees that are the first to germinate on cutover land. A logging road in a forest is shaded and produces the perfect, tall poles with minimal limbs to are looking for. Pioneer trees from sunny clearings will be all limbs and no pole.

you could try using peeler poles, available at home centers. I'm told they are what's left after veneering machines get done with a log.

Two great replies. Now I know where to go, and what to ask for. Thanks Gents!
