Hi there everyone! Been snoopin round and found that this is a great place to hang out and get a little advise and knowledge. Anyway I just got a lathe, (piece of....) but it spins and I gouge. Here is a bowl I made, I think it qualifies as a bowl.....Thanks!http://awoodpile.com/b2.jpg

Roger very nice, but I don't know if you can eat ice cream out of it. So it might be art!

I like it and agree its "Art". Watch the cracks, they do fly apart!

Nice! Great piece of art.

Pretty ambitious chunk of wood for a 2nd bowl! Hope you were wearing body armor.

Roger, you did well. Nice bowl for #2. Here's just a hint or two:
Skip's post rings true; cracks can be dangerous. When you locate cracks, you can run a little CA glue into them, which will hold them together better than unglued. If you turn away the CA, put in some more. If you're close to your finished thickness, give the piece a wash with 35%lacquer/65%Thinner (keeps the CA from staining the wood), blow out the crack with a blast of air (so the lacquer won't clog up the crack), then allow it to set for a minute or two (so it dries), then put in the CA. The lacquer wash will sand away if you want to use an oil finish.
Hope this helps a little.

Hello Roger. Welcome to SMC!!!

Nice turning you have there and I also agree with watching those cracks in the wood....you really don't want one of those pieces flying off the lathe and hitting the "artist" behind the tooling. ;)

Thanks to alll. BUT you all missed the barb wire that the branch had grown over that is still in the wood. Now it is really scary......

And not so good for the sharp tools.
