Any reason why this type of caliper can't be used as well as the standard figure 8 caliper for checking the wall thickness of a bowl?

Only reason is wall shape. The figure 8 configuration is a bit more flexible, IMO. This style works nicely on straight walls. If you have curved walls where the curve exceeds the max measurable with the straight leg of this style caliper, what do you do then?

So much depends on what it is that you're planning to do! :p

Good question Rick....but I can't answer your question. I've never used calipers on turnings to measure wall thickness. For bowls I just use my fingers or both hands to feel the wall thickness. It's amazing what you can tell just by feel. ;)

I use those calipars for almost everything. I really like them for checking the wall thickness on the hollow christmas tree ornaments that I make. I have them in the large and the small size and use them all the time. I also have the figure 8 ones also.
