I'm goofing with the lathe. Just kinda getting use to the tools again. I'm cutting on some scrap maple, poplar..etc. I put a piece of scrap walnut on the lathe and in walks my son. With puppy dog eyes he's asking if he can try.

Well, I show him a few things and round out the wood. Then give him the tools, put my hands on his until he gets a little feel. He just went to town. I said let's have some fun and make a captive ring. He said what's that? So, I show him how to start one and he takes over and works both sides of the piece. Mind you all of this is done with a 1" skew! I showed him how to sand it down a bit and then put on some BLO with a paper towel.

So, here is my 11 year olds (Josh) first turned project.

And I've only got a couple of scrappy round chunks. :o

A turning star is born. You raised him good!

And with a SKEW, no less!

Hug him good. It's so great to have the youngsters in the shop to see that real men can have fun and not just drink beer and belch. Some of that, too, maybe, but the first part is really important, IMO. That's why I taught some of my church's 8-12 year olds how to use power tools. What a great time we had.
