Got back from our annual vacation to Super DIRT Week today. Spent the last week there and the weather more than cooperated. This was somewhere around our twenty fifth or sixth annual trip up to the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse,NY. What follows is a bit of a summary, in video and picture form of the trip.

For years, the campers that arrived early for Super DIRT Week were staged in one massive field that is normally used as a parking lot for the annual New York State Fair. Some campers arrived up to six or seven days early. We usually arrived five days early so that we could catch another major dirt track race at a nearby speedway. This field has got to be at least three or four football fields long by at least one wide. This field allowed a well orchestrated method of cueing the campers into the fairgrounds. Well, that field wasn’t used this year and that is to bad since the job they did this year was horrendous. The video that follows shows the area used for this years camper staging.

Well, we finally got into the fairgrounds and set up out camper in the reserved spot that we have had for well over ten to fifteen years. Here is a quick video of the area around our camper.

I had been involved in the sport of auto racing for nearly thirty years in various capacities, mostly on the journalistic side, writing for a number of publications. I wrote for this publication for over ten years. I took the opportunity this year to get an updated photo of the now retired editor and his wife with myself and my wife. This husband and wife are truly some of the nicest people I have ever had the pleasure to know!

I had hooked up with some internet racing acquaintances and found them in the infield and we began to down copious quantities of a mixture of Jaigermiester (sp?) and Red Bull – an interesting concoction.

Well, the trip had a lot to do with local dirt track stock car racing and this composition wouldn’t be complete without some pics and video.

One of the tracks nearby hosts an annual event during Super DIRT Week and I brought along my trusty digital camera to get some video. This is the Brewerton Speedway and the division is the 358 cu small block modifieds.

Back at the NY State Fairgrounds, I caught some of the practice sessions for the big block modifieds. These cars turn an average of around 130 to 135 on the mile.

Looks like you had a fine time, Fred, despite the staging situation...hope you're relaxed and ready for fall! (And lots of time in the shop, of course...)
