My brother got married February 14 for the first time at age 40. No big wedding - only my mother present. So I just finished this box for his wedding present. He didn't want anything bigger.
It is mostly walnut with avodire and cherry veneers in the bottom and the tray. The top has redwood burl veneer with inlays using mahogany, poplar, cherry, maple, purple heart, yellow heart, bloodwood, and ebony inlays. The top inlay was done as units and then put into the redwood veneer. The redwood came darker than the test piece, so the inside of the top does not show up as much as I expected. I plan to give it to him and his wife at Thanksgiving.
Except for the avodire, all the veneers were cut on my band saw and then finished to 1/16" on my Performax. The marquetry was cut on the scroll saw using a very fine blade with the table tilted to 9 degrees. Only broke 5 blades. Bought the redwood as 1/4" thin stock at the Woodcraft store in St. Louis for $10.
