Can anyone tell me where pin oak fits in into comparison with red oak or white oak? I have a large log that came from my daughter's yard and need to justify if it is furniture wood or fire wood.

I had a large pin oak log cut up a few years ago and got some nice boards. The wood would be classified with red oak.

Lower butt log will be fine. ;)

Forget the upper logs that have the branches.
Those are either firewood or turning stock.

Roger,
A good rule of thumb is that if the oak has rounded leaf ends, it is probably in the class of white oaks. If it has pointed leaves (like your case), it is usually classifed as a red oak. Both red and white oak can be used nicely for furniture if the wood is good.
