I have been looking for what I think is a Rail and Stile router bit. what I want to do is cut a groove for 1/4 inch plywood to sit in. I would like to have a matching Rail and Stile set. Also, since I don't have room for a router table, Can I get these bits with bearings? I have looked on amazon and found one set that I think would work, here is the web address.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00006XMTT/qid=1046729499/br=1-1/ref=br_lf_hi_1//103-5131616-7980610?v=glance&s=hi&n=3116551

I'm not sure if that set has 1/4 or 1/2 inch shanks and if both bits have bearings. I was also hoping I could find a set for $50 or less (I know I'm cheap)

If anyone could point me in the direction to other websites that I could check, I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

Good luck on the under $50. Maybe a whiteside here is a link to woodcraft.

They have an improved tounge and groove bit it cost about $65. It is one bit that you could use as both. This might be a cheaper alternative.

First off, what you are looking for is not a rail/stile set.

Rail/Stile sets are used for making doors and such. They not only cut the groove for the panel, they also cut a profile on the inside edge and the coping cut to make the rail match the stile. You can't use these in a hand held router.

What you linked to was a tongue and groove set. It will cut a groove around the inside of a door and the tongue cutter will cut the end of the rails so that they will fit in the groove. This is a rather simple process that can be done on the TS as well. The slot cutter is fine to run in a handheld router, but I would not want to run the tongue cutter in the handheld router. It has way to much bit exposed and is taking to big a cut. You can cut the groove with the slot cutter and cut the tongue using the table saw, a hand saw, or a rabbiting bit.
