I am on the cheap side and this was not being used so now it is, Old twin fan Window fan, a pleated furnace filter and some scrap plywood, not pretty but functional and real quiet.

Harry,

I really like that. I've got a couple of fans kicking around here that would work pretty well for that.

Any specific filters that you have found work better than others?

I lucked out at a garage sale and ended up with 4 cases of 10 pleated air filters like the ones shown in Harry's setup. When I build my filter setup the filter size will dictate the size of the case and fan.

You could use any fan and make a transition david (geometry?).

I need one of those Harry.

This is what I put together before I bought a air filtration machine, and I still use it occasionally also. The filter slides out of the metal channel and is washable. I did the sheet metal work. It's not alot of CFM, but it works pretty good when you have it close to what your working on. http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c89/Woodchuck_/FanFilterBack.jpg

Are you pulling air through the filter or pushing air through the filter & does it make a difference?

pulling, I made one for wife, she works from home on puter, has allergies, says it helps her breath.

I'm pulling air through the filter side. I figured the motor wouldn't be exposed to as much dust if it was filtered first.

Harry, you always seem to surprise me with your ingenuity.

That is GREAT Harry. I may build one of those myself. Heck, it would even be worth it to buy the fan and build the whole thing from scratch. Commercially-made air cleaners like that usually go for upwards of $100.

It helps her breath? That's amazing, an electric Mentos.

We did something similar for an air cleaner for our new shop except we used a squirrel-cage blower......or in this case of removing dust a squirrel-cage 'puller'. And it just sits flat on the floor on pads but at least is close to the main work/sanding area. I'm sure it doesn't take as much out as the high dollar commercial ones but is a world of improvement over nothing.

When looking for fans for air cleaners. See if you can find the ones that have the round shroud around the blade. they will force more air through the filter(Pull) then letting it leak back behind the blades and just recycle it.

I guess I'm kinda lazy. I first taped my filter to the back of a fan, and now I just let the suction from the fan hold the filter on.
