I found (and now lost) a bed design in a ww mag for a futon mattress that slides out like a day bed instead of folding down like a normal futon. I'm guessing the article was 1-3 years ago. Anybody have it?

I would be very interested in this as well. I want to build something for our guest room/wife's sewing room. And a futon just doesn't have the charm of a daybed.

James,

Can you describe the futon's movement in any greater detail?

I might be able to help find the article, but I'm confused by you description, because daybeds generally don't have moving parts. A daybed is a flat bed fame, usually twin size, with high rails on three sides to support pillows so it can be used as a lounging sofa during the day, as below.

From your description, I believe what you are looking for is called a "trundle bed" IIRC. That may help you in your search.

(Quick edit)
How about this from Wood Magazine? (this seems to be something up their alley)
