Howdy,

Well tonite was the nite!!! I played hookie from work this afternoon to get the final coats of poly on the wife's EC. It has taken me three months to build, but I have only really worked on it for 7 days during that time. Making a living is really getting in the way of my woodworking!!! :D

It's inspired from the one in Oct. '03 WWer's Journal. I had to make it bigger to fit our equipment and I made a couple of other changes, but it's pretty much the idea atleast from the magazine. I really like the hinged stiles that allow the doors to open flat against the sides of the case.

It's all white oak. I resawed a bookmatch for the door panels from a really nice wide board. Matter of fact all the solid wood in the EC is from some sequenced boards that I was lucky enough to find at my local mill. The side panels are white oak plywood. The stiles on the case are cut from the same board as the door stiles etc... to try and achive a really nice consistent look to the piece.

The finish has been a problem child...or I'm a problem child when it comes to finishing....I'm sure you probably read of the trouble. I got the match good enough to suit me. The stain is a 50/50 mix of cherry and dark walnut with a few coats of satin poly.

We got it wrestled into the house and loaded all the equipment. Glad Payton was around tonite. Believe it or not, everything worked on the first try!!!!!

Thanks for looking,

Terry

Here it is in it's final resting place. These pics still don't do the wood justice, but you can kinda see the tiger in the door panels. Looks much cooler in person.

Terry, that's well done. You're right I was following your finishing saga. I', glad you stopped to fix the sides, I think they look 100 times better then the previous stripe motif. Nice work. Lars

Looking GOOD Terry, very nice work, beautiful piece of furniture.

I agree with you about making a living getting in the way of woodworking, fishing, or anything else for that matter. Must be a better way, sure do wish I knew what it is! Oh well, eleven more years and I can retire!

Again beautiful job on the EC, congratulations on a successful project.

Great work Terry,
That must be the key element I'm missing in my work;). A really clean shop. I'm going to give that a try in my next project.
Thanks for sharing.

Very attractive piece, Terry. It does a good job at supporting the "hardware" while remaining a really nice furniture design. Great Job!

Thanks everyone!!! It's been a long journey, but the end result was worth it. It was a good project that I really enjoyed....until the finishing stage. :D

Lars,

Yup, the finishing was quite a deal. Never dreamed the plywood was going to do that to me. It took lots of messing with it, but I finally got it to blend in pretty well.

Terry,

Cheryl was still smiling really BIG this morning. She has really wanted a EC for a long time. She really never thought much of the big TV being exposed. It feels good to make her that happy!!

Tyler, I think he's yanking your chain. My projects have about the same amount of mistakes, clean shop or not! :D

Terry,

Looks great my man! I knew you could whip that finish is you stayed at it.

Terry,

That is just an outstanding entertainment center. You should rightfully be very proud. There is only one problem. I showed it to SWMBO and she said, "Obviously he loves his wife more than you do. Why can't you do something similar for me?"

See what you've started.

Terry,

All kidding aside I'm a true believer in cleanliness being next to Godliness, but there just seams to be so many things going on at once everyone being the most important, it is hard to keep up. You’re a good teacher and inspiration

Terry,

You did a great job on the EC! I really enjoy seeing all of the pieces, creations, and ideas of fellow woodworkers. You do nice work.

The neat thing about this woodworking stuff is that you always learn something new on each and every project. Sometimes it's simply what not to do on the next project, but it's still learning. I'm glad to see you conquered the finishing problem, and I'm sure you learned something from it.

Making a living is really getting in the way of my woodworking!!! :D

Boy can I relate to that. It does have a way of making you really thankful for the time you do have in the shop though!

Again, great job.

Terry,

Your head looks a little swelled in your pic so I'll bring you down to earth a bit:

What happens when you want one one of them newfangled Plasmas TV or, *shudder*, a LARGER television??? :D

:D ha, ha...nice flowing design and it looks tight and solid... :D

Hats off to Hatfield!!!

Terry, that looks fantastic. The figure of the door panels are a great touch. Seeing as how it looks better in person, when are you having us over? I'm sure we can all stop by some time :D I'll even bring the DVD's and pop (aka soda)!

Thanks again everyone, very very much!! Glad you all like it!!

Todd,

I lightly sanded the light areas and applied just the dark walnut portion of the stain mix. I basically brushed it on and let it sit for a long time before barely wiping the excess. It really blended the lighter parts in much better. It's not perfect, but I'm happy with the result.

Chris,

Cheryl says I can NEVER have a TV any bigger than this one, :( so....I guess the EC will work from now on. :D

Jason,

Come on down any time!!! We love to have visitors around here.

todd,

Ask and ye shall recieve...sort of. Very difficult to get it to show up well in a pic for whatever reason, but here's a few. Hopefully you can get the idea. I still have more boards just like this 12" to 15" wide. :D

That's just splendid, Terry! I never knew Oak could look that nice! We've got a LOT of Oak around here, but I can't seem to get anything that nice. Also, I don't know what mods you did to make it fit better, but you certainly kept the aspect of it very nice. Great job!

I've just decided that white oak is my favorite wood. I've been cutting up lots of pen blanks, and there is a significant quantity of red oak, but there is some white oak too. I can even smell the difference between red and white oak when I cut it now. Maybe I'll invent a guy's cologne: "White Oak - For Manly Men" (I've had a long day...)

Todd and John,

I was plain old lucky to get these boards. They were on the bottom of a big stack. I wanted them because they were wide. My supplier said he would help me unstack the stack if I really wanted them. I had no idea of the figure until I saw the first one. For 3 bucks/ bd. ft. I guess I did good. :D

I read some where that 1 in 1000 white oak trees have this kind of tiger grain. Like I said, luck.

And BTW Todd, you need sleep. ..:D ....even though I do love the smell of white oak and obviously it is my favorite wood.
