This is a piece of mesquite I got from the city about 9 months ago. Many of my rough out from when I was new to bowls just have awful shapes and are in need of serious saves. This was one of those pieces. Luckily I was incompetent enough back then that I left a lot of material near the base so I had some extra wood to work with.

The piece is Mesquite and is 11 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches. It is a tad over 1/2 inch at the rim and the wall thickness drops to about 3/8th after the band on top.

I usually like to put a pretty good gloss on my pieces but left this one more natural looking, finishing with Tried and True Original with no buffing. Not crazy about it but think it turned out pretty good for a save.

Mike, I think nicely done. Mesquite will polish up nicely, but also looks nice with a matte finish like you've done, nice job! I have a particular interest in Mesquite because we have a lot of it here and that's what I turn primarily. Very nice work! Jude

Very nice Mike, you know without that usual gloss and with that nice sturdy rim somebody might actually think you made a utility piece ;)
That'd be a great popcorn bowl.
Really though, its a very nice piece, I like the rim detail and the foot. It works for me.
