I just picked up a couple of chunks a wood from a pile cut by the city. I was wondering if anyone could identify?

could be cherry,mountain ash, or velvet ash

i would guess from where ya got it is velvet ash

this from my tree book, wet the end of a log and lets see the grain:D

Using arborday.org's tree identifier confirmed my guess that it might be box elder, although they said ashleaf maple was another possibility.

Boxelder, which I think is the same as ashleaf maple.
