What size bowl gouge to get?

I would like to turn some bowls. I only have a roughing gouge and a parting tool. What size bowl gouge should I get? I will be turning on a 1014 Jet mini, so I will be relegated to small bowls for the foreseable future.

Mike.....my first lathe was a Jet VS Mini. I use a 3/8" bowl gouge. It worked well for me.

I'd recommend 2 bowl gouges......a 3/8" and a 1/4". I use a 3/8" a LOT and I also find myself using a 1/4" for finishing off the bottoms so the cut is light and toold control is far more refined.

Yep 3/8 flute ( 1/2 in dia steel ) and the 1/4 would be perfect for the smaller work, I use the 3/8 ( 1/2 in dia) and a 3/4 Ellsworth for larger/harder wood, I find I use less muscle energy using the larger bg. and at my age i need all the energy i can get.:eek:

I agree with the 3/8". I have the 3/8, 1/4 and 1/2 inch.

3/8 is very versatile. Have used them on all sizes and types of turnings.
