i'm making a few pens out of stabilized box elder burl blanks, and i'm looking for recommendations for finishes.

are they finished like regular wood blanks?

any finishes to stay away from?

i've used general finishes oil & urethane on several pens, and i've recently been experimenting with deft lacquer. will these work? or, should i just sand the stabilized blank and then apply a wax and call it a day?

Any finish appropriate for pens will work on stabilized blanks. You may find that with micro mesh pads you can get the piece to the gross you wish with any finsih at all. Try it. Then a quick coat of Renaisance Wax is all you need.

Jeffery - I still throw on a couple of coats of thin CA on stablized blanks. You'll see that the first coat will find a few spots to soak into. Then I very lightly wet sand and wax.

I finish my stabilized pens using Enduro the same as my non-stabilized ones.

I use a paper towel with Watco Danish Oil (Natural). Apply twice. Then using the same damp paper towel, a couple coats of thin CA.

Once dry wax/buff with Carnuba.

This doesn't produce a high gloss, but I'm looking for endurance.
