Hello folks,

I just finished the chair, took some pictures and planted her inside. It is based off the classic Maloof low back chair. I tried to incorporate the natural character and beauty that I see in walnut with the knot and sapwood. It is a danish oil finish.

Critiques and comments welcome.

Good day,
Kyle

Terrific job, Kyle. Excellent wood selection, joinery, and shaping.

It must have been quite a challenge to shape the area around the knot.

WOW, freehand or with plans

Sascha,
The chair was freehand looking at different pictures of Sam's chairs. There are a couple of different ideas I would like to try with the next one if there is another.

It must have been quite a challenge to shape the area around the knot.

Jay,
The knot actually wasn't a problem, I had sent epoxy through the knot before beginning any of the work.

Kyle,
I am truly amazed, and can't fathom how this could be your first Maloof type project. You are gifted, especially since you only looked at pictures and then went to work. Your use of the Woods and colors is wonderful. Keep up the great work and we will be waiting for your next masterpiece. Well done....

Wow, you did a great job on the chair. I've been wanting to attempt one of these for long time now. I just love the look of these chairs and truly admire Sam Maloof. To think, these chairs go for $25,000 if you buy one from Sam. Did I mention the 3 to 4 year waiting list? It must be nice being Sam! Again, good job, I hope you enjoy the chair.

Fabulous chair - do you have any pictures of the construction?

A couple of questions
Is the seat back steam bent?

Is the chunky tapered piece that connects the chair arm to the leg a separate piece or was it made as part of the arm?

Thanks again folks.

How is it to sit in?

Jim,
It is quite comfortable however if I make another one I will angle the back rest a few more degrees. I had thought I had it dialed in but trying to hold the backpiece in place with clamps and at angle when I would sit against during the building process I couldn't lean hard.

Bryan

Bryan,

1) Sorry no pictures of the process but I had found a site made by a British fellow who documented his process of a similar chair, here it is http://www.philsville.co.uk/maloofchair1.htm

2) The seat back is cut from a piece of 12/4.

3) The tapered piece down to the front leg was glued to the arm piece during the build up and then shaped. The actual arm is made from 4 pieces as I was trying to not use as much wood stock.

Kyle,

What the others have said. What is the choice of wood and finish? I am wowed!

Bob

Bob,

The wood is walnut finished through 320 brilliant and then 2 copious coats of Daly's Ben Matte wet sanded for about 30 minutes each with a 500 abralon pad.
