For the FWW members you have likely seen Garrett Hack's huntboard. Well I liked it so much I decided I have to have one. I am building it pretty much straight from his plans with minor modifications to fit my tools or skill. I am using Q-sawn cherry and flamed birch. The curl on the birch is not that obvious when it is un finished. Anyway here are some progress pictures...

A sander, domino, router, or jiwsaw..... Yes I have the bug (I bought my first one about 6 months ago)...

James,

I'm building one too. I'm not nearly as far along as you. I hope to cut the mortises in my legs and taper them this weekend. Your's looks great!

I have one quesiton: did you have any trouble with the inside dovetail in the top stretcher, the one into the short grain of the side piece next to the leg? That seems like a weak construction to me and I was thinking about eliminating the short grain piece and going with a half tail into the side.

Aren't those dovetails a little big...they look about size 13... :D :D :D ...that mallet is a whopper, too...

Looks like yours is coming along nicely.

I toured an old plantation house in Georgia last year and saw one for the first time. I too wouldn't mind building one. Don't know just where I'd put it.....but you shouldn't let trivial details like that stand in the way.:)

That looks like a great start and a great place to practice you HC DTs.

The smaller dovetail (pin side) is definatley harder to cut due to the grain orientation and I would not use that dovetail alone to provide structural strength, but coupled with the other it is very strong. Go slow when cleaning out the pin side to avoid tear out.

James, thanks for the tip. I guess I'll stick to the plan and use the whole dovetail in the side panel. I'll be careful with it.

I made a jig for routing the long leg mortises. I cut them this morning. Here's a pic of yours truly, intent on the task at hand (apologies for the focus).

Keep posting pics of your progress. It's an ispiration.
