View Full Version : Metal Detecting

A friend wants me to build some picture frames out of old barn wood, and I don't have a real metal detector. I do have a Ryobi stud finder that detects metal pipes and wires in the wall. I put some nails and screws in a 2 X 4, and tried it to see if it pinpointed the metal, and it seemed to work very well. My question is, is this accurate enough as a metal detector for wood, when my saw blades and eyes are at stake?

Suggest go to WoodCraft and purchase a Little Wizard --around $20
It will be more accurate

Here's another vote for the Little Wizard or its big brother Wizard (about $80). The $20 or less investment is much less than a blade and it can find even staples that have been broken off and not visible. The Litle Wizard has a small head, but that only takes a little more time. The Wizard is more like the wand at the airport and a lot better for lumber before the jointer and planer or for logs and turning preparation.
