View Full Version : Schedule 35 pvc pipe for dust collection system?

Has anyone used "schedule 35" pvc pipe with a dust collection system? I installed a Clear View dust collector in my shop and I am ready to install the pipe runs. I called one supplier and asked for 6" ASTM 2729. He said he only had Schedule 35 pipe but it was comparable to 2729. The prices seem to be lower than I expected them to be.

I did a search for schedule 35 and could not find much info on what the specs are all about. If you have any info as to whether I can use this, or if there is anything I should be aware of, could you please respond to this post.

Thanks in advance for your help

I know the O.D. is the same as the place I bought my S&D (2729) carries the Schedule 35 fittings only and they fit either. Dont know if there's a difference on the I.D. and thickness.

SDR35 & 2729 do indeed have the same outside diameter. Both work fine with the flex pipe I ordered from Wynn in 4" and 6". The SDR35 has a thicker wall, is green, and obviously heavier. My $.02 would be to get whatever is cheaper...(probably the 2729)

Is the green color always true? At least the Sched 35 fittings I bought were white. Dont know what color Sched 35 pipe they had though as I didn't look at that.

The SDR-35 pipe will be more expensive than the 2729 but chances are that the 2729 will be harder to find than the SDR-35. One positive side to the SDR-35 pipe is that with its thicker wall it will be able to absorb a whack much better than the 2729 pipe will. Probably a non-issue but a fact none the less.

The pipe can be either white or green depending on the mfg. Never seen any green fitting either.

Doug,
I just asked a friend who installs septic systems for a living - he works with all kinds of PVC. He said ALL SDR35 is green and ALL fittings for SDR35 & 2729 are white.

The PVC I used is called 6" PVC-SD. I always just say 6" Thin Wall and they know what I am talking about. I have hit, Bumped, Dropped, slammed, etc the thin wall and it have never failed. I am very happy with my choice for my DC.

I think the last 10' peice I bought ran roughly $12 for 6"

There is no schedule 35......it is SDR35. If someone tells you it is schedule 35 have them show you the stamp on the pipe and the ASTM reference number. It would be interesting to see which one they reference.

I say this in order to assisit you in purchasing the product. I know for a fact that when you call a wholesaler and ask for something incorrectly, but they know what you are asking for, some will sock it to you on the price unless it is a place you do business with a lot.

SDR35 will work fine for your application. One thing everyone needs to remember when using PVC for dust collection is to keep it out of the sunlight. PVC has little UV protection and in time will become brittle. Watch for sunlight shinning directly onto a pipe. Either shade pipe or inspect every 6 months or year.

One last thing. PVC should never be used as a compressed air line. The only plastic-rigid pipe that meets ASTM specs for compressed air is ABS/airline. I have watched videos of PVC exploding when used as a airline and it looked like a grenade with all the fragments.

I was just at a yard today with stacks of white SDR35 ??? Maybe its a west coast thing?

I just finished doing 6' PVC to whole shop. The fittings are from Lowe's
and the pipe from plumb supply. All in white

The 6" fittings from Lowe's have both D-2729 and D-3034 on them. The pipe is SDR35 ASTM D3034. Every thing fits together good even the 6" to 4" reducer going to 4" D-2729 pipe.

While I agree the SDR35 will be just fine, handling that stuff if you hang it form the ceiling is torture. It may be your only choice, but if you can get the 2729 life will be much easier.
